Space Opera Libretti: Modern Comedic Space Opera with Arias, edited by Brian McNett and Jennifer Lee Rossman, is now available!

The problem with space opera is that there’s not enough opera in it, and certainly a dearth of coloratura diva sopranos in the third act. This anthology sets out to fix that by placing the music front-and-center. We’ve created a glittery disco-ball of fun. 20 stories designed to amuse. Some actually take place in space. There’s even an actual opera in here. We didn’t hold back.Time-traveling cats that quote opera… Intergalactic singing competitions… An endless song that becomes the soundtrack to countless generations of rebellions… And, of course, invisible space bears made of black holes that may or may not be extinct.
Back matter of Space Opera Libretti
My story, The Silken Eclipse, stars Duchess Aroobella Doneylda Vatrooshka, an aubergine tentacled diva whose sumptuous voice captivates her audience—particularly one enamoured lord who cannot watch her performances without needing a change of undergarments. Alas, everything is not copesectic with this much beloved opera company; there are machinations backstage. A young soprano dubbed The Golden Goddess very much wants to usurp the Aroobella’s role. Will the Duchess be overthrown? It ain’t over until the purple lady sings!
I had a wonderful time working with fellow Spoonies McNett and Rossman, whose work also appears in this anthology. Lovely folks. Follow them on Twitter at @b_mcnett and @JenLRossman.
