Book acceptance! A new crew is coming in 2023!

I did a teaser trailer about a cool thing that I announced yesterday!

THOSE WITH LIGHT SENSITIVITY: I didn’t have a problem with the flickering border under the text or brief flash of light near the end (I have light sensitivity myself and didn’t find it that intense), but here’s a warning that it starts right after I say, “Get ready for season one,” and the text briefly flashes out toward the screen for the next three panels. If you’re unsure, please do not watch this video.

There is a dramatic score in the background, and what appears to be a whirl of stars in space after the line, “The crew of a certain science vessel tears through space.” The video is mostly text flying onto the screen and there is an audio voice-over of the text.

This is the news: Iris and the Crew will tear through space in the Fall of 2023!

ID: Book advert by Cait Gordon. Aqua background. From left to right: Iris, a platinum-haired woman in a grey uniform with a sash, bending over an aqua robot. Her left hand is on the bot’s head and her right is holding a low-vision cane. Lartha is brown-skinned with half her head shaved, revealing a tattoo that says, “Just try it.” The other half of her head has flowing, wavy magenta locks. She’s wearing a black and grey uniform and aiming a large tubular weapon in front of her. She has two prosthetic limbs, and the left one is a glowing beacon with a short black boot. Davan is blue-skinned with pointed ears and a long trunk. He’s wearing a sleeves amber and grey uniform and waves to his right. Herb is pale skinned with brown and russet wavy hair in chunky layers, just hitting his shoulders. He’s in a baggy green mechanical uniform with pockets. Herb’s back is to us as he points to the tear while trying to get Davan’s attention. Text: Season One, Iris and the Crew Tear Through Space, by Cait Gordon, Coming in the Fall of 2023
(Just an advert. Not the cover.)

I’m so excited for you to meet this crew. I loved writing this first season, although world-building a space opera while inspired by the concept of Universal Design and the Social Model of Disability… during a eugenics-based pandemic on Earth… was… interesting. I found myself diving into Iris’s world just to escape this one. This series is my dream of what things might be like if a society became so accommodating and accessible, they wouldn’t understand the need to use identity-based language for disability. All bodyminds would be celebrated as part of everyday life. They would just… be.

The Iris and the Crew series follows the adventures of a science vessel crew on a massively accessible ship, the S.S. SpoonZ. They are a part of a galactic network known as the Keangal (key’angle), where inclusivity and supports are the norm. But not everyone is living in harmony within the Keangal—most notoriously so are the dreaded Piranha Brigade pirates whose creed is to do away with anyone they consider “weak.” And they’ve discovered a new enemy in Iris and the Crew…

I gobble up so many streaming series, I decided to make one myself, in book form! My hope is to have Blind, Deaf, neurodivergent, and disabled readers find themselves represented as major characters in this story! (I think there might be abled, NT members of that crew somewhere on the ship. I mean, it is inclusive after all.)

Anyway, squeeee!

My review: In the Shadow of the Spire is a much-needed Star Wars story

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: author February Grace is probably one of the kindest people ever to be found on Twitter. She’s really a delight, so consider following her! Aside from being a lovely human, she’s also a brilliant writer with over 30K followers on Wattpad alone. This month, I found out why, after reading her Star Wars fan fiction story, In the Shadow of the Spire.

She had me at the first chapter.

Book cover: In the Shadow of the Spire, February Grace. A young male Jedi apprentice wears a brown cloak over a white vest. His eyes stare intensely at us. His face sports a stubbly beard. His blue lightsaber is ignited.

In the Shadow of the Spire takes place after The Last Jedi and during and after Black Spire by Delilah S. Dawson. It’s about the fate of two brothers who had been under Master Skywalker’s tutelage when Ben Solo became Kylo Ren. One brother, Rook, turned to the dark side with a mission to kill his brother Evar, who insisted on staying with the light. Evar escapes his doom by way of his Jedi student teacher, Lilia Dae. Teaming up with Savi, who fans will recognize from Star Wars Galaxy Edge, the trio split up to keep the boy safe from Rook, Ren, and the First Order.

Woven into the seamless word-building, and giving even more life to Savi’s workshop on Batuu, are the rich character arcs and a romantic element that makes this reader sigh dreamily. The romance isn’t clunky or tacked on. It doesn’t take away from the action and the rich tapestry of knowledge Grace has of this part of the outer rim. I was completely sucked into the setting, storytelling, and my Star Wars geekiness loved that Grace hit all the details dead on.

For me, In the Shadow of the Spire is a much-needed Star Wars story. After watching Episode IX, I felt hungry for a story written through the female gaze. This is not to say Grace doesn’t write male-characters extremely well, but the women in In the Shadow of the Spire are so satisfyingly portrayed with a balance of strength and vulnerability that finally feels realistic.

And the resolution of the conflict between the two brothers was just right.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, I really recommend this work. To me, it should be part of canon. Grace put every scene inside my head so vividly, I felt like I watched this book as a series. And the best part? You can read it free on Wattpad!

(Now I’m secretly hoping for more Star Wars stories from this author. In the meantime, there are many other titles for you to read in her Wattpad profile!)

A Disabled/ Deaf/ Neurodivergent Crew Tears Through Space

I’m keeping the details of my new WIP close to my chest because I just want to immerse myself in crafting the first draft. However, I can say that this space opera promises to be a lot of fun.

To date, I’ve mapped the “writing prompts” for each episode of Iris and the Crew Tear Through Space, and I have the titles in place for each. My plan is instead of chapters, the book will have episodes, and each episode will be a short story. This really works for where my brain is right now. I’ll feel a sense of accomplishment by breaking down this book into smaller stories, as opposed to writing a novel. Plus, if I achieve my goal, it should feel like you’re binging a series! Like many series, there will be 13 episodes, but it will be released as an entire book.

As with my other works, my eventual plan is to submit it to Renaissance because I cannot think of any other publisher that would respect the representation (and the author) in quite the same way. Diversity matters to me and to Renaissance.

Also, lately I’ve been overwhelmed with poor representation of disabled/Deaf/neurodivergent characters in fiction, and want to answer the call for disabled authors to write them as heroes in their own adventures. I’m building a world that I’d like to live in as well. You’ll understand what I mean when the book (or, I guess I can say “series”) is released.

So, if you’ve been following this blog, you’ll have noticed I’ve been bouncing back and forth with what my next WIP will be. That was primarily because of exhaustion and burnout. Not writing at all is not a good option for me, though. I realized that writing t truly helps my mental health, and I have a feeling these characters are gonna be a blast. I’m already seeing their personalities come out in “Episode One: The Intergalactic Janitor.”

Humorous space adventures really are my happy place.

Will keep you posted about my progress!

Noola schooled me in ’Cosm. Xax did in The Stealth Lovers!

Space background with ringed planet. In white text: Life in Cait's 'Cosm

I feel my characters in these microcosms are always trying to tell me something about myself. When I was drafting Life in the ’Cosm, I was #DisabledAndAlone, so not in community with other Disabled folks. I was frightened, completely unsure about my future. I had been a runner and worked out regularly. Then fibromyalgia pummeled me, and I could barely walk. The fatigue had made it so I could hardly do anything in a day. Frightened? I was terrified, without any comfort. Advised to do yoga.

As I said hundreds of times, I started writing ’Cosm as an exercise to take my mind off the pain. In Chapter three, I decided to create this wacky, glittery, monstery-haired person on roller skates who slams into my protagonist. Yup, enter stage left, Ms. Noola Quirk. She was so upbeat, but had no qualms about keeping things real. Her love of people and lust for life was infectious. She was also kinda silly, but in a fun way. And then my hands typed the words that identified her as disabled—with a neuropathic disease that could possibly leave her paralyzed in a few short years. Um, what?

But I didn’t delete. I just went forward with the story. When she takes the MC to a club, and he’s resistant to enter because he’s shy and feeling socially awkward, she says to him:

“Virj, there’s a time coming for me; I know it’s crouching, just waiting to pounce. I won’t be able to stand or walk by my own power, and there’s a chance I might not be able to leave my flat much, because of excruciating pain. After that, there won’t be pain. There’ll be no feeling in my legs at all. I don’t know what my life will be like then, and how I’ll manage it. Maybe everything will be fine. Maybe I’ll figure it out. But until that happens, I’m gonna grab every moment that is presented to me and savour it to the full. You can go back to the hotel if you like, but I’m inviting you to enjoy my life with me, tonight.”

Life in the ’Cosm, Chapter 12, by Cait Gordon

Maybe I didn’t have a disease that would eventually leave me paralyzed, but I did have a neuropathic pain condition that led me to believe I’d be in a wheelchair one day. At that time, I thought this was the worst fate and didn’t understand how freeing a mobility device would be. (Yay, internalized ableism!) However, I examined what Noola was saying: “I don’t know what my life will be like then, and how I’ll manage it. Maybe everything will be fine. Maybe I’ll figure it out.” These were my true feelings then. What is cool about that passage is that I did figure it out, got into Disabled culture, and everything is fine (apart from the systemic ableism, but I’m managing my mobility just fine).

Now comes, Book 2, which I guess is Book 0, since it’s a prequel. I put a lot of work into The Stealth Lovers. This wasn’t all stream-of-conscious writing like in my first book. I wanted to craft a plausible military culture to set Xax and Viv in, so we could find out how they became legendary, formidable, and fabulous!

Xax is always a blast to write. One thing that struck me about him in TSL, as I was shaping the story, was how his brain had a way of slowing everything down so he could hyperfocus during battles or even simulations. The way in which he’s skilled without it dawning on him as anything special intrigued me. He doesn’t really assume he’s that talented. He figures anyone can do what he does. And he’s not really impressed by earning accolades or by those with them. Social norms? What social norms? He’s just going to be Xax. He does care about being a warrior and will do his duty, but he’ll only respect those who are worthy of it. And he has a really strong sense of justice. You want him on your side. He’d also be least likely to fail a lie-detecting test, because he calls out BS with such relish.

I said to my BFF, “I think Xax might be neurodiverse.” Then I submitted the story to Renaissance, months before I had this almost Biblical-like revelation that I, too, am neurodiverse. I’d written it subtly through Xax here and there—my brain was probably trying to gently hint at me. Yeah…I didn’t clue in at all. Then my brain eventually got fed up and threw me into such sensory overload late last year as a way of saying, “OKAY??? ALSO: HERE’S ALL YOUR LIFE FLASHING BEFORE YOUR EYES SO YOU CAN SEE BACK TO YOUR CHILDHOOD, TEENS, YOUNG ADULTHOOD, AND UP UNTIL NOW, YOU SEXY YOUNG CRONE!!! Go call yourself autistic, tell your doctor, and let’s get on with it!”

Spoke to my BFF first, who is also autistic, and she made a “this is my surprised face” face, metaphorically. We spoke about my various traits at length. Welp, guess I was the last to know. So, nowadays I’m also tuned into the autistic and neurodiverse community, where I’m feeling validated and encouraged. I cannot get enough of the snark, too. Snark is truly life.

Anyway, thanks, Xaxxy, for sparking my brain to realize a thing. You’re an awesome pilot, dude. You’re never gonna be a diplomat, but Viv has that covered, so it’s all good. Keep being you!

Huh. I wonder what I’ll learn about myself in Life in Another ’Cosm?

Black and white promo of The Stealth Lovers.

Okay, the cat’s out of the bag!

I was going to wait on this, but anyone who purchases MJ Lyons’ novel, Murder at the World’s Fair, will see a promo for my upcoming book, The Stealth Lovers! Cover and all!

Promotion of The Stealth Lovers. Cover design description to follow in this post. You can find the official back-cover blurb on the book page of this novel.

Now, I’m only going to post the larger cover image (and in colour) when it’s closer to the pre-order date. I think. 😉

But I’m really happy with this design. It has this barren mountain range with Xax and Viv standing on an icy mountain top, about to engage in a kiss. Overhead flies a lone fighter ship. Once again Nathan Fréchette made magic with the title font, and I love how the word Stealth looks like it’s trying to be stealthy.

I asked for the author font to be the same as in Life in the ’Cosm, so the books look like they are part of the same series.

Anyway, that’s a glimpse! Can’t wait for you to read it. The book has already gone into second edits, which I have to incorporate next week. Things are happening!

LITC paperback

Why there’s going to be a second edition of Life in the ’Cosm

A totally unexpected thing happened to me a few years ago—I accidentally wrote a book. It was just supposed to be a creative writing exercise to take my mind off my chronic pain, and it turned into an epic tale with aliens, love, adventure, and dessert!

ID, book cover: Purple, blue, and teal nebulae behind a ringed planet. Hurtling through space is Splot, an alien resembling a fried egg. Text reads: Life in the ’Cosm, by Cait Gordon.
ID: Book cover of Life in the ’Cosm. Space background with ringed planet. A little alien shaped like a fried egg hurtles through the cosmos.

So much has happened in my life since May 2014, when I started writing this wacky tale. I was dealing with fibromyalgia, and it was getting increasingly worse. I watched my athletic activities dwindle to nothing, I couldn’t handle working even one day a week outside of the home, and my pain and fatigue were overwhelming. The worst part was I was going through it without being part of a disabled community. So, I considered myself #DisabledAndAlone, meaning, I had internalized ableism and used accidentally ableist language.

It came out in my writing.

Feedback on Life in the ’Cosm had been generally quite positive, for which I was grateful. Also, many readers loved Noola, who popped up in chapter three to my surprise and taught me how to deal with my own life. (I eventually got a mobility device and named it after her!)

Now, let’s fast forward to 2019. I am not only a disability advocate plugged into Disabled Culture, but I am also the co-editor of Nothing Without Us. This own-voices anthology stars protagonists who are disabled, Deaf, neurodiverse, Spoonie, and/or manage mental illness. Part of my role is to be a sensitivity editor for ableist terms that don’t have nuance in the stories. So, looking back at my first novel, I realized I really wanted to clear out flippantly-used ableist phrases.

In my first novel, my characters are flawed souls, so it won’t ever be perfect, but wow, did I correct a ton of uses. Yikes. But that’s okay! I also fixed other things that I was not aware of before, so it’s all good, too.

I’m extremely lucky that my publisher, Renaissance, is letting me do this. They really believe in representation, so that was such a pleasant surprise.

The goal is for the second edition to be released with the Kickstarter rewards for Nothing Without Us. My guess is it will be available online for purchase this fall. So, an updated Life in the ’Cosm and its prequel, The Stealth Lovers, should be released roughly the same time. Yay!

As usual, I will totally keep everyone posted!

And thanks to everyone who read ‘Cosm and told me they can’t wait to read the prequel because they love Xax and Viv so much. I think you’ll be happy with their origin story!

Space ship and vapour trail

Cover design for The Stealth Lovers is happening!

And here’s a snippet!

Space ship flying away
ID: Fighter ship flying away into space.

Once again, I’m working with the super-talented Nathan Fréchette from Renaissance for this cover. I wanted something that was a little different from the ’Cosm series but would still look like it belonged as its prequel. (For the two sequels following Life in the ’Cosm, the title fonts will be the same as the first book, and there will be a featured object hurtling through space.)

It’s hard for me to put my characters on the covers of my novels, because I really want readers to use their imaginations. However, Xax and Viv will be in a zoomed-out shot, so you’ll have an idea of their appearance but can still fill in the blanks yourselves. Also, they will be sharing a tender moment, so claws and fangs will be retracted. Because otherwise, OW!

I’m super excited to share this book with the world. I just love those guys and always think of them as #RelationshipGoals. The Stealth Lovers will have sassy humour, military adventures, romance, and it will also underscore the importance of friendship. I’m hoping readers will enjoy watching the couple grow up together, as the story spans from them being 19 to reaching their mid-forties.

Um. And there might be a scene where they sample desserts in the officer’s lounge. (You really didn’t think I could write a miltary space opera without including cake, right?)

I will reveal the cover closer to the pre-order date! Right now the manuscript still has to pass through two more rounds of editing!

But I’m tickled with these two blurbs of praise so far:

“The fiercest, most formidable warrior-lovers in the ’Cosm are back. And the battle has never been so fabulous!”
Stephen Graham King, author of A Congress of Ships

“HOLY STARS, I loved everything about this novel!!!”
Jamieson Wolf, author of Little Yellow Magnet

So that’s my authory news this week! Oh, hey, the Nothing Without Us Kickstarter is still on until the end of the month. Help us reach our stretch goals! Learn more about this project and its authors!

Will write more about life in my ‘cosm soon! For now, back to donning my editor’s cap!
