ID, book cover: A stitched heart against a black stitched background. Title: We Shall Be Monsters, Edited By Derek Newman-Stille.

We Shall Be Monsters is a collection of Frankentales inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1818 version of Frankenstein. My short story, The Hilltop Gathering stars Frances Elizabeth Stein, or Frank E., who spends the evening navigating her rollator (and headspace) through the gaggle of quirky relatives who have come to celebrate her sweet sixteenth. While normally laid back, Frank E. is incensed when her mother reveals the teen’s birthday present.
